They say there is more than one way to skin a cat. Being an animal lover, I’ll have to take their word for it. In a similar fashion, there is more than one way to burn a candle. We’d like to take some time to share some tips to help you get the most out of your candle experience.
Our first tip comes prior to even purchasing your candle. Check the label to see which wax is used to create the candle. At SOZO, all of our candles are created with 100% soy wax. You might wonder if this is really a big deal. I guess it depends on how much soot you enjoy with your candle. Many candle companies use paraffin wax which often creates a significant amount of black soot that collects on candle jars, walls, and other surfaces within your home. Paraffin is also derived from petroleum and contains 11 carcinogenic toxins which are released when burned.
There are even candles made with a paraffin-soy blend. Shortcuts have their place, but that place is not SOZO. Our 100% soy candles are eco-friendly, renewable, American grown, sustainable, carbon neutral, and actually burn 50% longer than paraffin candles.
Another vital candle tip is to trim your wick before every burn. This might be the most important tip. Unmaintained wicks may cause many undesirable affects. Trimming your wick promotes a relatively calm, medium-sized flame which is the ideal candle flame. If the wick isn’t trimmed between burnings, it will create a larger, flickering flame resulting in a faster burn time and larger soot output.
Have you ever been frustrated because your candle is burning unevenly? Here are some practical tips to help solve this problem.
As a rule of thumb, candles should be burned 1 hour for each inch of diameter. For example, if your candle is three inches in diameter, you should allow the candle to be burned for at least three hours. This allows for an even wax pool which covers the entire surface of the candle. As a result, it maximizes the candle’s scent throw while extending the burn time. If you burn your candle for shorter periods of time and don’t allow for an even wax pool, it will create a “memory ring” around the wick which makes it quite difficult for it to melt completely during future burns.
We hope these tips will help you enjoy your candles without the frustrations of sooty jars and memory rings that keep you up all night long, tossing and turning. Because, at SOZO, we want you to enjoy your candles as well as a great night sleep. Burn on my friends.
